STRIVE FOR LIFE FOUNDATION
SOCIAL IMPACT

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a silent threat that can strike anyone, including seemingly healthy young individuals, often without warning. Behind these tragic occurrences lie undetected heart conditions, ranging from genetic defects to structural abnormalities and arrhythmias. Uncovering these hidden dangers early through comprehensive screening programs is paramount in our mission to prevent potentially fatal incidents.

The impact of undiagnosed heart conditions on our communities cannot be understated. Annually, thousands of young lives in the United States are tragically lost to SCA, many of whom had underlying heart defects that went unnoticed until it was too late. The ripple effect of these losses reverberates throughout families, schools, and neighborhoods, leaving communities devastated and forever altered.

Fortunately, the power of early detection and timely interventions cannot be underestimated. They hold the potential to drastically reduce SCA incidents among young people, ultimately saving lives. By identifying these conditions before they become life-threatening, we not only spare families the heartbreak of loss but also contribute to stronger, more resilient communities. Each life preserved through early detection serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative impact of proactive screening and treatment programs.

In this pursuit, we envision communities where the specter of SCA no longer looms so ominously. Instead, we see neighborhoods filled with individuals who have been screened and treated, their lives forever altered by the knowledge and protection against heart-related threats. It’s not just about saving lives; it’s about preserving the fabric of our communities, ensuring that they remain vibrant and whole, free from the shadows of preventable heart-related tragedies

WE STRIVE FOR CHANGE
Our commitment to driving change is evident in our strategies and the tangible steps we take to make a meaningful impact.

Strive for Life was established in 2014, driven by a profound realization: many young individuals lacked access to comprehensive heart testing. This deficiency in access left countless youth vulnerable to undiagnosed and potentially life-threatening heart conditions.

Our founders astutely recognized that the tragedy of sudden cardiac death among the youth could be averted. The key to prevention lay in ensuring that every young person, irrespective of their financial circumstances, had the opportunity to undergo comprehensive heart testing. Our mission, succinctly put, is to make comprehensive heart testing accessible to all because we firmly believe every life is worth safeguarding.

The Strive for Life Foundation is dedicated to igniting transformative change in cardiac testing for children and youth. Our collaboration with My Heart Check has been an eye-opening experience that has underscored the pressing need for early cardiac testing in this demographic. One crucial aspect that struck us was how this partnership significantly reduced the cost of these tests compared to what a hospital would charge. However, even with these reduced costs, we realized that some families might still struggle to afford these essential screenings.

At the heart of our mission is the steadfast belief that no child should ever be left behind due to financial constraints. Our commitment is unwavering, fueled by the alarming statistics and compelling evidence demonstrating how lives can be saved through early cardiac testing. It is abundantly clear that timely screenings can identify potential genetic heart defects and prevent tragic outcomes.

Our aspiration is not limited to addressing this issue but to create a powerful platform for raising awareness among those needing more clarification on the life-altering impact of cardiac testing.

We firmly believe that this knowledge should be accessible to all, ensuring that everyone, irrespective of their background or means, can have a healthier and more secure future.

The Strive for Life Foundation is not just an advocate for change; it’s a catalyst for transformation.

In addition to this, we advocate for a change in policy and approach. We firmly assert that cardiac testing for children and youth should be mandatory, parallel with fundamental health check-ups and physicals at statewide and federal levels.

By making this a standard practice, every child can have the peace of mind that their future is safeguarded against potential genetic heart defects. It’s not just about being reactive but adopting a proactive stance towards the well-being of our youth.

The Strive for Life Foundation is not just an advocate for change; it’s a catalyst for transformation. We are here to ensure that no child is denied the opportunity to lead a healthier life because of financial constraints and lack of awareness. Together, we strive for a world where every child’s heart is tested and their future is secured.

SETTING THE STANDARD
MY HEART CHECK
My-HeartCheck, part of the Kansas City Metro Community, features a highly skilled team specializing in remote group event services and comprehensive testing. Their management team, with 30+ years of healthcare experience, specializes in mobile cardiac testing, having examined over 14,000 children and youth.

My-HeartCheck, developed in collaboration with renowned medical institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, offers the most comprehensive youth heart screening program available.

With a mission to enhance the outcomes for children born with heart defects, an estimated 40,000 cases annually (1 in 100), My-HeartCheck recognizes the ongoing challenges in early detection, given that many conditions may go unnoticed at birth and can manifest as children progress into their teenage years.

My-HeartCheck collaborates with medical professionals, schools, and youth organizations, offering testing locations for just $149, significantly less than hospital costs. Recognizing financial challenges some families face, the organization works closely with non-profit partners to provide financial assistance for eligible families, ensuring no child misses essential screenings.

ECHOCARDIOGRAM: The echocardiogram (also known as an Echo or heart ultrasound) accurately evaluates the structure and function of the heart. This comprehensive assessment encompasses heart muscle abnormalities, valve function, coronary artery anomalies, and the detection of potential aortic root disorders. As endorsed by the Mayo Clinic, the echocardiogram stands as the “Gold Standard” for heart structure evaluation.

ELECTROCARDIOGRAM: The 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG) is conducted to evaluate the heart’s electrical system, which maintains its rhythm. This test efficiently uncovers common abnormalities like Wolff-Parkinson-White and Long QT syndromes.

BLOOD PRESSURE: High blood pressure among children and adolescents is an escalating health concern frequently underestimated due to its asymptomatic nature. Younger children are more likely to have identifiable medical causes for high blood pressure, while older children can develop this condition for reasons akin to adults, such as obesity, poor dietary habits, and insufficient physical activity. Left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to severe health issues, including heart disease and stroke.
